THE AVOCADO TREE
Avocado
The avocado is native to Central and South America. It is a beautiful evergreen and makes a pear-shaped fruit with a singular seed in the middle of the creamy flesh.
Arizona
The Arizona is a great variety for a hotter climate. The skin is bumpy with a dark green color. The flavor of the fruit is deep and nutty.
Day
The Day produces a green, medium club-shaped avocado with smooth skin. The fruit ripens from July – September. On average, the Day will bear fruit once it reaches 3 – 4 years old.
Lula
With her pear-shaped and beautiful green skin, the Lula avocado is a winner. The Lula seed is on the smaller side allowing more room for the creamy flesh. The Lula tree will tolerate temperatures to the mid-twenties. The fruit will ripen between October – December.
Uh-la-la
The Uh-la-la is sometimes known as a “super Haas”. It is a smooth, dark-skinned avocado with a small seed. It is a larger fruit than the traditional Haas and contains a creamy, nutty-flavored flesh.
Cold-Hardy Avocado
These evergreens will make a statement in the yard or patio. Once mature, the tree can reach an average height of 20 – 30 feet and a width of 5 – 8 feet. They are cold-tolerant from the upper teens to the lower twenties. While known for being self-fertile, they are more productive with at least one partner.
