
THE AVOCADO TREE
Avocado
The avocado is native to Central and South America. It is a beautiful evergreen and makes a pear-shaped fruit with a singular seed in the middle of the creamy flesh.
Arizona
The Arizona is a great variety for a hotter climate. The skin is bumpy with a dark green color. The flavor of the fruit is deep and nutty.
Day
The Day produces a green, medium club-shaped avocado with smooth skin. The fruit ripens from July – September. On average, the Day will bear fruit once it reaches 3 – 4 years old.
Lula
With her pear-shaped and beautiful green skin, the Lula avocado is a winner. The Lula seed is on the smaller side allowing more room for the creamy flesh. The Lula tree will tolerate temperatures to the mid-twenties. The fruit will ripen between October – December.
Uh-la-la
The Uh-la-la is sometimes known as a “super Haas”. It is a smooth, dark-skinned avocado with a small seed. It is a larger fruit than the traditional Haas and contains a creamy, nutty-flavored flesh.
Cold-Hardy Avocado
These evergreens will make a statement in the yard or patio. Once mature, the tree can reach an average height of 20 – 30 feet and a width of 5 – 8 feet. They are cold-tolerant from the upper teens to the lower twenties. While known for being self-fertile, they are more productive with at least one partner.
Brazos Belle
This beauty originated in Pershall, Texas. She is a vigorous grower with a harvest season from August – September. You can expect a shiny, black fruit.
Don Juan
The Don Juan is known for its beautiful, speckled green fruit ready for harvest between August – September.
Fantastic
The Fantastic avocado has a green skin with a creamy interior flesh that can be harvested from August – September. She is a year-round beauty!
Joey
The Joey was founded by Joey Rivers in Uvalde, Texas. The medium sized fruit is egg-shaped and purple to black in color. It is a heavy producer whose harvest can be enjoyed from August – September.
Lila
Originated in Uvalde, Texas and is a tight-growing, vigorous tree. The green fruit is a medium, pear-shaped size and is ready for harvest from August – September.
Mexicola
The Mexicola produces fruit with thin, purple-black skin and sweet, juicy flesh. With a harvest beginning in early September, the Mexicola harvest begins a little later than other color-hardy varieties.
Mexicola Grande
The Mexicola Grande fruit is slightly larger and rounder than the Mexicola with a greater flesh-to-seed ratio. The skin is paper-thin and purple to black in color. The flesh has a high oil content. The fruit is ready for harvest in September.
Pancho
The Pancho originated as a seedling at Stuart Place, Texas. The fruit is oval to slightly pear-shaped, light green with a vert thin skin. While mostly green, it is possible to see a little red toward the middle of the fruit.
